Design Communication
Design Communication introduces students to visual communication techniques that are graphically presented to explain the content by using different medium.
Most of the lectures conducted during the semester were pre-recorded what allowed students to cope with architectural work-load during pandemic period. In my opinion, information provided during the lectures was straight and absolutely understandable.
I appreciated the way Times portal information on the module was organised and distributed among boxes, meaning students were able to find lectures, tutorial activities and assignment briefs by clicking on the right box.
The work and support of tutor and module coordinator was excellent. Tutor's feedbacks were straight, understandable and individual approach to each student was observed.
In the beginning of the semester I accomplished the series of tutorial exercises that let me to 'warm up' my skills on academic drawing, rendering and lettering necessary for future module assessments.
Among the tutorial exercises were 'Self-Expression' rendered drawing, 'Hatching Technique' drawings, 'Architectural Lettering' exercise, and 'Scale and Colouring Media' rendered drawing of floor plan.
All of these warming exercises were focused on improving of coordination, ability to understand colouring techniques and hatching techniques to deliver the visual information clearly and neatly.

During the semester I performed the following projects:
- Project 1. Movie Poster - was focused on understanding and clear delivery of the main idea of the chosen movie/series/TV show and its visual representation where was used particular type of colouring media and colouring technique.
- Project 2A. Model Making - the project aimed to teach the students to use effective and time-saving scheme to build the model in five stages.
- Project 2B. Orthographic Drawings - one of the most important aspect of any architectural project is an ability to implement the orthographic drawings by understanding of object dimensions, ability to draw it to necessary scale, application of suitable line thickness, and ability to follow the drawing conventions.
- Project 2C. Axonometric - was focused on illustration of architectural forms and spaces through interpretation of visual information using two-dimensional and three-dimensional orthographic drawings.
- Project 2D. Perspectives - the expected outcomes of the project were introducing design communication skills through illustration of architectural forms and spaces in one-point and two-point perspective drawings.
- Project 3. A1 Presentation Board - aimed to develop in students ability to develop visual communication skills to interpret the idea/design to others clearly, ability to create a cohesive flow of visual information on the board, and finally ability to work efficiently within a set timeline.
As official social media sites we used:
- Microsoft Teams for conducting tutorials, sharing the important announcements, posting tutorial progress and attendance exercises.
- Facebook for distributing the announcements and scheduled meetings.
- Telegram for delivering the announcements and straight communication among lecturers and students.
Project 1
The poster is one of the main part of film that helps to understand what it is about. It represents the atmosphere and power of the movie. My inspiration for movie poster was Turkish Magnificent Century series. In the middle of my poster I demonstrated Hurrem Sultan, who was the most powerful women in Turkey. In the background I posted her palace with domes and ornaments of that time to give the poster a more historical look. I think the hardest part was to demonstrate her glance. It had to be neither too strict nor too gentle. This project helped me to show my fillings and idea right.
Project 2 A/B/C/D
Aims of these projects were to fully understand and be able to illustrate the architectural forms and spaces, two – dimensional and three – dimensional orthographic drawings. Working on this project it had to be divided into several parts as it helped to facilitate the process of work. These forecasts were generated at a scale of 1: 100. Taking part in the work "Orthographic projections" I got a fairly deep understanding of architectural details. In Project 2B, I created two – dimensional and three – dimensional drawings using orthographic projections in three steps. The goal was to learn hand-projection techniques in an architectural drawing. I produced the plan drawing, elevation and section. Constant drawing practices helped me to achieve a good results. My next exercise was axonometric drawing which is a good way of expressing an architectural idea. The aim was to introduce design communication skills through architectural graphics. These projections will be generated at a scale of 1:100 on A3-sized butter paper for construction and finally inked on A3-sized cartridge paper. For the 2D project I introduced perspective as a mode of communication in architecture. I followed two required steps. There were two – point perspective and one – point sectional perspective. I was interested by south elevation external view. I included a picture plane, viewing angle and stationary point. The next step was to ink the perspective onto a piece of A3 tracing paper. For one – point sectional perspective I repeated steps above but for this perspective I first selected which interior view I want to cut in section within the building.
